Fall in British Columbia
On October 8th, I headed out from my cozy home in Dundas, ON at 4:30 in the morning to take an 8 am flight to Kelowna, BC. It was quite the journey. I took an uber to the GO bus station in Hamilton, took the GO bus to Pearson, a 4 hour flight to Kelowna, another Uber to the Kelowna mall, and then a 4 hour bus ride to Castlegar - and it was only 3pm by the time I got there! From Castlegar, my mom and brother were waiting in a parking lot to pick me up.
My mom moved out to British Columbia - Rossland, to be exact - back in 2019. Since then we’ve been trading trips - she comes to me, I’ll come to her. But it’s been a while since I’ve been in the fall. It’s hard to tell what my favourite season is there. They all have value in different ways. If you head to the travel page on my website, you’ll see photos from each season I’ve been.
This October was was something else. The trees turned vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow. The main street of Rossland (pictured above) is lined with beautiful trees that turn red in the fall. One morning I woke up to find snow on the ground, and I was filled with unbridled joy. The snow unlocked a feeling in me that I haven’t had in a while - a complete giddiness and intense feeling of wanting to be creative. I grabbed my mom’s winter boots and my camera, and took off into the backyard. I only came in once I was hungry enough that I couldn’t ignore it anymore.
The only downside to having photography as your job is that you don’t want it to be your hobby anymore. It makes sense. I do it all the time, my hobbies are often things to give me a change of pace. I wasn’t even going to take my camera on this trip.
But last minute, I decided to anyway. And I’m so glad I did.
Because of a few ongoing health problems she’s being experiencing, I haven’t been able to see my mom since April. It’s been very scary. But being out there with her, being able to make her dinner, play scrabble, cheer her up - it was exactly what I needed.
Enjoy some of the photos I took while I was in Rossland for the week.
